Well it’s the new pond season, at least here in Ohio. Actually my wife has had our pond running for the last few weeks. The fish are up and things are growing again around the old backyard pond.
An interesting thing happened that proves what I say about the importance of a UV filter. When my wife put in our pond filter and attached the UV filter to it, the pond water was really green and mucky. After a long winter, this is normal. After about three days we noticed that our homemade pond filter was doing it’s job trapping lots of debris, however the water wasn’t getting any clearer.
Here to find out that the UV light bulb was burned out, we immediately knew why the water wasn’t clearing up. She went and bought a new bulb, put it in, and within just a couple days, the pond water cleared up. We can now see the bottom of the pond and all the fish. It’s really amazing how well these Ultra Violet pond filters work.
Our largest Koi fish has made it through another harsh Ohio winter. She looks bigger and stronger than ever. As a matter of fact all the fish look like they’re doing really well.
Most of my wife’s perennial flowers are popping up all over. She raked around the pond and fluffed up the mulch. She has it looking good. How are things going with your pond? Let us know, and send us a picture if you get a chance. Good luck and all the best, Bob.

We have a small outdoor pond which I have had up and running for a couple weeks now. I winter over the fish inside during our cold winter months. The pond water temps are swinging from about 40 overnight temps to 60+ daytime. Would it be too early to put the fish out with temps dropping into the 30-40 range ?

In all honesty I don’t see a problem at all by putting your fish out. I have never wintered my fish over since I’ve had my pond (16 years) and they are doing great. Good luck to you.

Interesting! I will have to check out some of these accessories for my pond to keep it running well!

We just bought our house last year, and we put 6 shubunkins in in April. Last week when the ice was finally out, we found 4 of them floating on the water. It looks like they have been dead quite awhile. The pond has a lot of decaying leaves on the bottom, and I was wondering of the gasses would kill them when the pond is frozen. There were a few dead frogs too, but still millions of tadpoles.

Hi Elaine,
That very well could be what happened. We also lost some fish this past winter and we really don’t know why. It was just our Koi, the other Comets and Shubunkins seem fine.
